Spain’s self-employed contribution system, reformed in 2023 and led by the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Security and Migration, is starting to show significant effects as we approach 2026. Although many professionals have not yet noticed changes in their monthly payments, new rules are already being applied that will directly impact specific groups.
A higher minimum contribution base from 2026
From 2026, certain self-employed workers will be required to contribute based on a minimum monthly base of €1,424, aligned with the General Social Security regime. This represents a considerable increase compared to previous minimum bases, which were around €1,000.
As a result, monthly contributions may rise by up to €135, depending on each case.
Who is affected by this increase?
This measure does not apply to all self-employed workers equally. It mainly affects:
- Company directors or partners registered as self-employed (so-called “autónomos societarios”)
- Family members collaborating in the business
- Self-employed individuals with no declared income
These groups are not allowed to choose lower contribution bases, as they are tied to the minimum base of the general system.
Why some self-employed workers are not paying more yet
Although the regulation has already been officially published, not all self-employed workers have updated their contribution base. In these situations, they continue paying lower amounts temporarily.
However, this is not a permanent situation.
Spain’s Social Security system is expected to carry out adjustments (regularisations) to align contributions with the amounts that should have been paid. This means that those who delay updating their base could face accumulated payments in the future.
Contribution system based on real income
This change is part of the new contribution model based on real income, approved in 2022. Its goal is to align contributions with actual earnings while improving social protection, particularly regarding pensions and benefits.
Recommendations for affected self-employed workers
In this context, it is advisable to:
- Review your current contribution base
- Check whether you fall into one of the affected categories
- Update your contribution base to avoid future adjustments
It is also important to remember that contribution bases not only affect current monthly payments, but also future benefits and pension rights.
Conclusion
Even if the impact of this reform is not immediately visible, it will eventually affect the financial situation of many self-employed workers in Spain. Taking action early can help avoid unexpected costs in the future.
